My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Shade of Vampire is a short book, only 147 pages. But I enjoyed each and every one. But it did feel more like an introduction to the series rather than the first book in a series. We're introduced to the world of the blood shade here and I felt that any action and real plot will take place in future books. Not that this wasn't a really good introduction, because it was.

Sofia is walking along the beach when she's approached by a really good looking stranger, and before she knows it, he's injecting something into her neck. When she wakes, she discovers she's on the island of the blood shade. An island that is bewitched to be hidden from the enemy, known as the shadow hunters, and is constantly dark. They keep humans as slaves, for blood and for other uses.

Sofia was taken as a gift, one of five blood slaves, for the prince, Derek Novak whose been asleep for 400 years but now needs to be awoken as the blood shade is in danger. But Lucas wants her for himself. He is cruel and evil and it appears he'll stop at nothing to get her.

Derek seems to take a special liking to Sofia, and I felt that, in a kind of stockholm syndrome way, Sofia is unafraid and finds herself returning his feelings. While this didn't feel like insta love, it still felt like it happened too quickly. From the Sofia we meet at first, her actions with Derek appear out of character to me. This wasn't quite enough to turn me off though.

A Shade of Vampire was a cute, short read and while not perfect, still really enjoyable and a series I look forward to continuing on with.

I'm glad it wasn't full insta love for you because insta-love kinda turns me off from liking a book sometimes. I bought this not too long ago because one of my friends adores this series, she is obsessed with Derek and Sophia, so I plan on reading it really soon. Great review. Really honest. Thanks for sharing! :)

An interesting vampire story with the blood slaves that are taken. Short stories are fun since I can read them in one sitting but then sometimes I'm left feeling like I need more but if it is a series I guess that is good!

I'm glad Sofia and Derek's instant sort of feelings didn't put you off A Shade of Vampire Suzanne. I'm not really feeling paranormal reads again, but when I'm in the mood for something quick, I will definitely have to consider giving this book a try! Great review! :)

I have been seeing this one everywhere and I just cant' get excited about it. I am so over vampires and even the thought of reading a vamp book is so unappealing. Glad this worked for you!

The romance sounds a bit creepy and weird, though, but I can't know that until I actually read and experience it. If it worked for you, well, who knows? It might work for me too. I'm willing to give it a try.
Great review!

Hmmm interesting. That's the problem sometimes with shorter books, the romances tend to move a little faster. I don't know if I'd like this, but might try it because it is on the shorter side.

I know you liked this one, Suzanne, but I'll probably skip it as I normally avoid books with vampires. I also don't like the sound of the romance. Great review though.

Sofia sounds like a great character to read about even if the relationship happened a little quickly and it felt more like a prequel than a full start to the series.

I totally understand what you mean about it feeling like an introduction. I haven't read this one myself, but I can definitely relate that feeling to several other books in the past. I'm glad you enjoyed it though! It sounds like a very decent read for such a short book. Fantastic review as always! :)

I think this sounds like a great start to a series and I haven't picked up a vampire book for so long! Wonderful review, Suzanne. :)
