This book was so much better than the blurb would lead you to believe. Vampires and werewolves, I still haven't got tired of them yet.
For the past year, since the death of her dad, Lexie has been dreaming about the same guy. She returns towards him feeling so happy to see him but when she reaches him, the dream ends in death.
Lexie's mom has a new boyfriend and the relationship moves really quick. Before she knows it, her mom is selling their condo and moving Lexie and her sister to Maine along with her boyfriend Dragos and his three sons.
While Lexie is out exploring the new town she meets some kids her age who invite her to a party. And who does she meet at the party but Torin, the boy from her dreams.
But weird things are happening in the woods around the town and animals are ending up dead.
This was different take on the vampire and werewolf mythology. There are two different types of vampire, the damphyr, who only feeds on animals and keeps their human side and the draugr, a bloodthirsty violent full vampire monster who feeds on humans. We don't learn as much about the werewolves as they don't come to light until the end of the book even though the reader is aware of them throughout the story. Hopefully, we will learn more about them in the next instalment in the series.
This book is written from the point of view of Lexie, Torin and every few chapters we get a viewpoint of the wolf. We are left to make up our own minds as to which of the four wolves this is.
Lexie and Torin are both likeable characters with more serious personalities. There is a good few secondary characters who are all well written and identifiable and add the sarcasm and humour to the book.
This book is well written except for the odd sentence which needs a bit more editing.
If you like vampires and werewolves, then be sure to pick up this book. Its a thoroughly enjoyable read. I liked the idea of "fate-partners" rather than imprinting and the "fangerection".
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
Maya and her friends--all of whom have supernatural powers--have been kidnapped after fleeing from a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set, and after a terrifying helicopter crash they find themselves pursued by evildoers in the Vancouver Island wilderness.
I can't wait for this. I loved the Darkest Powers series and The Gathering was so good.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. You know the rules: grab your current read, open to a random page and share a two sentence teaser with us (no spoilers!). Be sure to tell us about the book, so we can add it to our TBR list!
He couldn't do it. The last thing he wanted was to hurt her, but she deserved better. Through their bond, he could feel her love for him. She was willing to stay by his side forever. If he was cursed to darkness, Lexie would be tied to the evil he would exist for.
This book was short and sweet. I read it straight through in a couple of hours. It was quite enjoyable though there wasn't that much happening here.
Jax (I love the name) is a witch. She is running away from her coven because she doesn't want to be evil. After the Salem witch trials, the witches harnessed extra powers from the earth and vowed revenge on humans. When Jax turns 17, she will be forced to murder a human and her full powers will come. Punishment for leaving the coven is death.
Jax buys herself an RV, moves to a small town and enrols in high school. She just wants to be normal. But one of the first people she meets and falls for is Kellar, and he is a supernatural hunter. And her new best friend? She is his cousin. What are the chances?
I enjoyed this book. It was more romance and high school drama than action with witches and hunters. It was well written and the characters were really likeable. Love at first sight was floating around the place and it just got intense too quick. The ending got a bit more interesting.
I would recommend this as a light easy read and I will be reading the next book in the series, Bane.
I’m pushing aside the memory of my nightmare, pushing aside thoughts of Alex, pushing aside thoughts of Hana and my old school, push, push, push, like Raven taught me to do. The old life is dead. But the old Lena is dead too. I buried her. I left her beyond a fence, behind a wall of smoke and flame.
Lauren Oliver delivers an electrifying follow-up to her acclaimed New York Times bestseller, delirium. This riveting, brilliant novel crackles with the fire of fierce defiance, forbidden romance, and the sparks of a revolution about to ignite.
This book was amazing, Lauren has outdone herself. I enjoyed reading this so much, the writing just flowed from start to finish.
I had one big question starting this book. Did Alex survive? And a big part of me saying, "please let him be alive". I don't want to say "yay" or "nay" and spoil this book for anyone so I am going to review it without going too much into the storyline.
Pandemonium is written in alternating chapters of 'now' and 'then'. In the 'now', we learn the story of Lena's emergence into the Wilds and how she deals with the struggles and hardships of this new way of life. A better way of life?
Through the 'now', we see Lena working as part of the resistance, and she is about to embark on her first mission.
The ambience of this book is very downbeat throughout. Lena really struggles with her new life in the Wilds and at times, even wonders if she wants to survive. Life is hard in every way and sickness and death are a regular occurrence without access to medical supplies and often, a shortage of food.
There are a lot of new characters and I did lose track of who some of them were but it didn't impede on my following the story. The main characters are well written, identifiable and likeable.
We see a completely different Lena than we did in Delirium. She grows into a much stronger person, in every way, character, mind and body. She is amazing.
The ending of this book is explosive. While the book was suspenseful at times, I really didn't see the ending coming. It is probably the happiest part and my heart was in my mouth. Then it ends on one hell of a cliffhanger.
In Delirium, we see life from one side of the fence, the Cureds. In Pandemonium, we get to see life from the other side, the Invalids. I can't wait to see what Requiem will hold for us.

“You're the brightest thing I've ever seen, Kaylee. You're this beautiful ball of fire spitting sparks out at the world, burning fiercely, holding back the dark by sheer will. And I always knew that if I reached out -- if i tried to touch you -- I'd get burned. Because you're not mine. I'm not supposed to feel the fire. I'm not supposed to want it. But I do. I want you, Kaylee, like I've never wanted anything. Ever. I want the fire. I want the heat, and the light, and I want the burn.”

Dusty Reads is a weekly meme, hosted at Xpresso Reads, featuring a book that has been sitting unread on your home shelf for some time.
My pick this week:
Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton First there are nightmares. Every night Ellie is haunted by terrifying dreams of monstrous creatures that are hunting her, killing her.
Then come the memories. When Ellie meets Will, she feels on the verge of remembering something just beyond her grasp. His attention is intense and romantic, and Ellie feels like her soul has known him for centuries. On her seventeenth birthday, on a dark street at midnight, Will awakens Ellie's power, and she knows that she can fight the creatures that stalk her in the grim darkness. Only Will holds the key to Ellie's memories, whole lifetimes of them, and when she looks at him, she can no longer pretend anything was just a dream.
Now she must hunt. Ellie has power that no one can match, and her role is to hunt and kill the reapers that prey on human souls. But in order to survive the dangerous and ancient battle of the angels and the Fallen, she must also hunt for the secrets of her past lives and truths that may be too frightening to remember.
Its so long since I got this I hardly remember now. I definitely have to read it soon.
I couldn't put this book down. So much so, that when I took it out to write my review, I found myself reading it again from THE kiss. I have had to pull myself away to from it now to write this.
This book starts about six weeks after My Soul to Steal left off. Kaylee and Nash are together again and Kaylee is working hard on her trust issues. Sabine still wants him back though, but they are all trying to get along.
But then, they get some bad news that rocks them all. Tod has seen the reaper list and Kaylee's on it.
The school has a gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Who it turns out, is an incubus trying to procreate. To distract from her own impending death, Kaylee wants to get rid of him and ensure her best friend Emma is safe when she's gone. And make it so he can never prey on the female population again.
If I Die brought out a mixed bag of emotions in me. I couldn't believe that Kaylee would really die, there is another book in the series after all. I had kinda guessed what would happen there but that didn't take from the story at all.
The dynamics of the series changes in this book, and while I was always a big fan of Nash, and didn't give much thought to Tod either way, I found myself falling for him along with Kaylee. Nash seemed different here, I felt he was kind of weak. I didn't like how he kept pushing for the sex thing after the failed attempt. I thought he should still have been waiting for Kaylee to take the lead on this and that kind of annoyed me. I did feel really really sorry for him by the end though. As much as I wanted Kaylee to end up with Tod, I didn't want Nash to get hurt. And things just went from bad to worse for him. I hope things get better for him in Before I Wake.
I really like Alec and hope we might get to see a bit more of him in upcoming books. He is the voice of reason a lot.
This book was my favourite in the series. If we go by the premise that the books get better as the series continues, I REALLY can't wait for Before I Wake.
"I'm dead, not impotent. Nasty rumors like that must be squashed before they gain momentum. Feel free to emphasize how very functional I am."
"I could have kissed you months ago, but it wouldn't have meant anything. I wished for you to see me. And want me. So...did you mean it?" Fragile hope peeked out at me from behind the smug self-assurance I now recognized as his mask. As armor, against a world that no longer claimed or understood him, and suddenly I realised he wasn't breathing. He was just waiting. For me. "Yes," I said, and some unnamed tension inside me eased. "I see you, Tod."
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent
Release Date: 22nd June 2012 by Harlequin Teen
I died on a Thursday-killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul.
The good news? He didn't get it.
The bad news?
Turns out not even death will get you out of high school...
Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent "recovering," she's back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend.
But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won't keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn't just gambling with her own life....
I just finished reading My Soul to Steal and If I Die, I absolutely cannot wait for this. June cannot come quick enough.
My Soul to Steal is the fourth book in the Soul Screamers series. And just like the first 3, it didn't disappoint.
While Kaylee is still trying to learn to trust Nash again, after he let a hellion use her body and tried to Influence her to sleep with him all while addicted to demons breath, along comes his hot ex-girlfriend, Sabine. And she wants him back. There is a lot of jealously flying around between them and it attracts a hellion of envy - who wants Sabine. And Avari still hasn't given up on having Kaylee's soul to torture for eternity.
This is an incredible series. Its been a while since I read the first 3 books in the series and I've been dying to read this but just couldn't find the time. I was easily able to pick up where I left off as these books are written in such a way that you were subtly reminded of what came previously without being repetitive.
We are introduced to a new character Sabine. She is a mara, she causes and feeds from nightmares. She will not go down in my list of favourite characters but I couldn't help but like her. She has a great snarky attitude which makes her enjoyable to read. I feel she underestimates Kaylee when she first arrives but by the end of the book, though she may not like her too much, I feel she has to admire Kaylee. And she has made an enemy of Emma, which is interesting.
After more trouble from the Netherworld, they realise that they all need to stick together to protect each other, as the are all now open to possession from the Netherworld. This can't be easy for Sabine and Kaylee and I am intrigued to see how this will play out in Die for Me.
I liked the idea of the bracelets and 'puppies' that would protect them from demons of the Netherworld.
I would definitely recommend this book to paranormal romance lovers. This whole series will be going on my "to read again" list and I can't wait to read Die for Me.
"I've had it with both of you." He pulled his own bag higher on one shoulder and turned to me. "You let me know when you decide what the hell you want from me. I love you, and I miss you, and I'll be waiting, whenever you're ready. But don't spy on me again. Ever." I nodded miserably as he twisted to face Sabine.
"And you! You come find me when you're ready to be my friend, because that's all I have to offer right now. But as badly as I need someone to talk to, I don't need another complication in my life. And as for the two of you!" He stepped away from us, already walking backward toward the school entrance. "Work it out. Or don't work it out. But leave me the hell out of it."

Publishers: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Imprint: Graphia Publishing Date: 20th March 2012 ISBN: 9780547608327 Author: Gina Damico View on Goodreads Young Adult
My rating: 4/5 stars
This is an awesome book. While not what you could call action packed, the narrative was funny and enjoyable throughout while also having its serious moments.
Lex's behaviour has taken a serious downturn in the last couple of years. She has gone from being a straight A student to constantly being angry and beating people up, much to the bewilderment of her parents, her twin sister Cordy, and herself. She doesn't know why she acts this way and she doesn't want it to continue. She is on her last chance in school so when her parents say they are sending her to stay with her uncle Mort and help out on his farm for the summer, she goes without too much of a fight.
But it turns out, her uncle doesn't live on a farm. He lives in the town of Croak and he is a grim reaper. Lex is about to join the family business.
Lex is a great protagonist with a smart ass attitude that I enjoyed. She can stand up for herself and doesn't seem to be afraid of much. There was great banter between herself and her partner in reaping, Driggs. He doesn't take any of her crap, they are great fun together. There is a great team of secondary characters too. They are well written and we can get an insight into them all. Uncle Mort is awesome, and he interacts really well with the teenagers. The world building is done really well.
While I feel that some people will have a problem with the whole "I've kind of been in love with you since the day I got here", I don't. I liked it. This book is not all mushy and romantic and I thought it was sweet. I could see how Driggs could be in love with the idea of her, and of her happy life, with the past that he had endured.
Overall, Croak is imaginative, funny, interesting, unpredictable and surprising. One of the funniest books I have read in a while. There is no cliffhanger ending and I can't wait for the sequel. This is a fantastic first novel by Gina Damico and I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
"No shit, jerkwad," she said with a grimace, wiping it off. "What's next? Will you be setting me on fire?" "Don't be ridiculous, Lex. The flamethrower shoots forward." Lex couldn't take it anymore. The madness had to be stopped. "Okay, wait a minute. You are my Uncle Mort? My father's brother? A certified biological member of the most boring family on earth?" "Guilty as charged. And I'm ecstatic to see you, kiddo."
"All I know is that I had never seen anyone like you, and your stupid smile was infectious, and I fell in love with it, and ever since you got here I've been falling in love with the rest of you, and now I'm so far gone there's not a damn thing I can do about it."
Thanks to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for providing a copy of this book for review.
Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth—her sister’s friend Sophie didn’t kill herself. She was murdered.
Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn’t actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else’s mind and experiences the world through that person’s eyes. She’s slid into her sister as she cheated on a math test, into a teacher sneaking a drink before class. She learned the worst about a supposed “friend” when she slid into her during a school dance. But nothing could have prepared Vee for what happens one October night when she slides into the mind of someone holding a bloody knife, standing over Sophie’s slashed body.
Vee desperately wishes she could share her secret, but who would believe her? It sounds so crazy that she can’t bring herself to tell her best friend, Rollins, let alone the police. Even if she could confide in Rollins, he has been acting off lately, more distant, especially now that she’s been spending more time with Zane.
Enmeshed in a terrifying web of secrets, lies, and danger and with no one to turn to, Vee must find a way to unmask the killer before he or she strikes again.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read mystery and suspense. It kept me guessing until the end and every time I thought I had figured it out, a new suspect emerged, eventually shocking me completely in the end.
It took me a long time to connect with the protag Vee. I felt like as soon as I connected, the book ended. I found her to be a very depressing, tedious character. I couldn't understand what someone like Zane would see in her. Even when she was with him, she didn't lighten up. When he told her he was falling for her, I was like "for what, her whining." I get that there was a lot going on for her but I just didn't feel that the relationship was believable.
I think Rollins should have played a bigger part from the start. He is supposed to be Vee's best friend but we no sign of this until the end, when he drops everything to pick her up when she hadn't even invited him to the party. Vee says they are drifting apart but gives no reason as to why. Because we never got to see him as a friend it didn't feel like they were drifting apart, it felt more like he was a stranger in the story. I would have liked to see a closer relationship with them in the beginning so the reader also could have felt the loss of the friendship.
This book was full of mystery and suspense which I guess was the point to it and for that concept, I would have to give it full marks. I enjoyed the idea of the story but I felt the characters were very one dimensional and I never connected with any of them.
I didn't like the ending. I would have liked to see a little bit more interaction with Vee and Rollins and his reaction to the letter. I felt the ending was kind of abrupt.
Overall, this is enjoyable enough and easy to read. Full of mystery and suspense with a romantic element.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book for review.

“The clock is ticking. I should be leaving right now. But what I want to do is take Cicely in my arms and press her up against me hard enough to make her not care that I'm messing up her lipstick. I want to pick her up and carry her back through that doorway. We're only a few strides from the couch, only one rip away from ruining that expensive fabric, the dress she must have bought to wear for him.”

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.
See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives. And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.
I can't wait to read this. I have had it sitting on my shelf for a long time along with If I Die and I've decided I'm going to read it NEXT. I can't wait any longer.

Hi guys, today I'd like to welcome author Laura Bradley Rede to my blog. She is the author of YA novel Darkride, and has very kindly offered to give away e-copies of her book to three lucky readers. First off, lets get to know her book.
Ander McNair used to be the favorite son of a great monster-hunting family – until he was bitten by a werewolf and the hunter became the hunted. Now anything that makes his pulse race, even a kiss from his girlfriend Cicely, is enough to turn him into a monster. When he finally gets a chance to earn his cure by killing a vampire prince, he finds he has to choose between his own past and the future of the girl he loves. Can a guy who’s not even human learn what it means to be a man?
Luke Marianez used to be an immortal vampire prince – until the witch he loved betrayed him and cursed him with the ability to die. Now he lives in the world of vampire blood bars, where the waitresses are the drinks, and dreams about killing the last of the witch’s line so he can live forever. But revenge doesn’t just mean breaking the curse. He wants to break the girl’s heart, too. Can Luke seduce Cicely without falling in love himself?
Cicely Watson doesn’t believe in werewolves or vampires. She’s not even sure she believes in true love. But she’s about to discover what every werewolf knows:
Tell us a bit about
yourself. I grew up the oldest of nine kids in a small town in Maine, and I now live with my partner and our three
awesome kids in Minneapolis.
I love art, both making it and admiring it. I also love animals – my three pet
chickens are some of my favorite “people.” I own a Great Dane because it’s as
close as I can come to having a horse in the city. I’m also a compulsive thrift
shopper. I don’t know how many pairs of Doc Marten boots I own, but its well
into the double digits.
What inspired you to
become a writer? My mother was Irish and she had that Irish gift for
storytelling and a love of all things supernatural, so I grew up with paranormal
stories. I always wrote for fun when I was a kid, just filling up notebooks
with stories and journal entries, so it just seemed natural to pursue writing
as an adult.
Why did you choose the
young adult genre and why write about vampires and werewolves? I write
young adult because that’s what I love to read! I love YA readers because they
are really willing to throw themselves into a story completely, and I love YA
characters because they are at an age when they aren’t afraid to take risks or
to really wrestle with who they are and who they want to be. They feel
everything with such intensity! Being able to access that as a writer is
exhilarating. And I write about werewolves and vampires because I think writing
about non-humans is a great way to get at some of the big questions about what
it means to be human: How am I going to use my power? What would it be like to
live forever? What would I kill or die for? Plus, werewolves and vampires are sexy and
dangerous. Who can resist that?
If Darkride was turned
into a movie, who would you like to see play Cicely, Ander and Luke? Oh,
don’t I wish! For Luke, I would love
someone like Ethan Peck, with those intense dark eyes. As Ander I could see someone
like Zach Roerig (who plays Matt on the Vampire Diaries) because he’s such a
boy next door. As Cicely, I might go with someone like Lilly Collins, but I
might just go with Sage Aurora Magee, who “plays” Cicely on the book cover,
because she did such an amazing job at our cover shoot!
I am completely torn
between Ander and Luke, who is your favorite? I love them both, but I would
probably fall for Luke because I’m a sucker for old-school romance. Cicely may
feel differently, though!
Crossfire, the second
instalment is coming soon, how many books do you plan to write as part of the
Darkride Chronicles? I originally conceived the Darkride Chronicles as a
trilogy, but I’m keeping an open mind. I want see these characters through to a
good place, whether that takes two books or ten.
Quick Questions
Favourite song? “Come to My Window” by Melissa Etheridge - so
romantic!
Favourite book? It changes all the time! Recently, “The Daughter
of Smoke and Bone” by Laini Taylor.
Favourite colour? Cranberry red.
Vampire or werewolf? Vampire! I’m a thrall at heart.
Darkride by Laura Bradley Rede Published: 9th December 2011 Young Adult Buy the book: Amazon/B&N/Smashwords My rating: 5 of 5 stars This book had me laughing out loud at times but it also brought tears to my eyes. A definite rollercoaster of emotion. A dark ride. But she’s about to discover what every werewolf knows: People change. You see the words girl, vampire and werewolf and you immediately think "another Twilight rip off". Nothing could be further from the truth. That is about as far as the similarities go. From the moment I was a couple of pages in, I did not want to stop reading. Written from Cecily's, Ander's and Luke's POV, this just captures the readers attention. It's fast paced and exciting, at times I was on the edge of my seat with my heart in my mouth. It kept me guessing throughout, I had no idea what direction we were going to be taken in. Cicely is an awesome main character. She is best friends with Ander, but secretly crushing on him. When he lets her down, she turns to Luke, who is only too happy to hang out with her. But this has unexpected consequences for him. Ander and Luke are natural enemies but they both need to make changes and work together for the sake of Cecily. They now have something in common. Cicely is a normal girl one day and thrown into a world of vampires and werewolves the next. I was amazed and awed at her strength and courage as she dealt with not only trying to save her own life, but also the lives of those around her. I still don't know exactly how I feel about some things that happen in this book, I will have to see how the next one plays out before I can make my decision. I love Ander and Luke and I'm completely torn between them. Normally I find it quite easy to pick a favourite in the love triangle, usually the guy who got there first, but not here. They are both great guys in their own ways. I really like Emmie too. She totally loves being a thrall and she is such a happy, friendly person that it would be impossible not to like her. Zoe is also a really good friend to Cicely and she is lucky to have her. Laura has put her own stamp on the mythology of vampires and werewolves. There are two different types of vampire, the ones who are born and the ones who are made. The ones who are made are undead. They don't heal from their injuries and can be killed by sunlight. The ones who were born are trying to get their immortality back. I would definitely recommend this book, vampires, werewolves, romance and action, what more could a girl want? "I press my lips to the curve of her neck, just to prove I am strong, just to prove I can do it. But I can't. I'm going to bite."
